To parents who are worried about their child and hesitating to reach out
Thank you for visiting this site.
When something happens to their child, many parents worry more than they would for themselves.
Before becoming a lawyer, I worked as a licensed preschool teacher (hoikushi). After my own child was born, I decided to become a lawyer because I wanted to protect children's rights.
Having seen many children over the years, what I want families to know is this: it is very difficult for a child to resolve a problem like this on their own. That is exactly why support from adults matters. And when a family is worried this deeply for their child, I believe they can move toward a good resolution.
Conduct that would be called assault or defamation among adults is often dismissed at preschools and schools as "just something children do." But for a child, a single day, a month, or a year can shape the foundation of who they become. I believe one of the important roles of the law is to protect children from conduct that crosses the line — and to help prevent both victims and perpetrators from arising in the first place.
You may worry that speaking with a lawyer means things will immediately go to court, but that is not the case. Reaching out to the school or preschool, or having a lawyer sit in on discussions, are just some of the ways — beyond litigation — to help restore your child's everyday life.
A consultation is not a place where you have to decide anything right away. Sometimes, after hearing what is going on, I may suggest simply watching how things develop for now.
Even if you are not sure whether you should consult a lawyer, please feel free to contact us. Let's start by exploring, together, the best possible resolution for your child and your family.
